It's the first week of the Summer Program, and we are off to a great start! In the next six weeks, students will explore these big questions (What is a family? What is a community? What is a world?) while also applying what they learned to their own community: East Nashville. This exploration will be experienced through daily Guest Readers, classroom discussions, weekly theme books, and a field trip.
This week, students at the St. Ann's location kicked off their big summer project - creating a newspaper. They worked on the cover of the newspaper and the ‘local’ section. With Megan Little of Platetone they learned about printing by creating their own fonts from rubber. They then used ink and printed the program’s theme, “My Family, My Community, My World” to make the newspaper cover. On their field trip, students visited local print shop, Sawtooth Print Shop, to see how letterpress works (see our photo below).
Also, the students explored new developments happening around East Nashville and also enjoyed East Nashville’s major green space, Shelby Park. They discussed questions such as, “How do you feel about tearing down buildings to build new ones? Would it be a good idea to build on all the land in East Nashville? Should we keep the parks? How do you think things will change in the future?” Third grade student Calvin Milton served as our newspaper photographer on our field trip.
Fourth grade students also interviewed Guest Reader Nathan Weinberg, an East Nashville Real Estate Agent and Developer, and are working on an article about the changing face of East Nashville.
Students enjoyed created ‘bunting’ and journals with guest art teachers from Turnip Green Creative Reuse.
