Ruth Lyman, former ENHE board member and retired Director of Resource Development at the Oasis Center in Nashville, shares her inspiration for supporting ENHE:
When I was a kid I used to hear commercials for Reading is Fundamental (RIF) all the time. It made me think what it would be like to not be able to read. So, to experience this firsthand, I would hide whatever book I was reading at the time in my closet. I would try to keep the book hidden each night when I usually read but, inevitably, I would retrieve my book--because I couldn't fall asleep without reading! It was a silly childhood game, but I really felt the pains of illiteracy. I'm grateful to be able to help support literacy, and I was very fortunate to have so many books in my life!
