#50kfor5thGrade

Picture
East Nashville Hope Exchange has received an anonymous, matching donation of up to $50,000 from a very generous and passionate supporter. We’d like to use those funds to launch a rising 5th grade pilot program.

Why Rising 5th Grade?
  • Research suggests that it is at about the fourth grade that children must deal with school reading tasks that increasingly move from "learning to read" to "reading to learn."
  • As this shift in reading demands occurs, children must move beyond stories and relatively familiar vocabulary to deal with unfamiliar vocabulary and expository text structures
  • Students frequently struggle when expectations change because they have not developed the skills and strategies needed to effectively adapt.

What does this mean?
  • The donor will match up to $50,000 for donations made by new donors or by current donors who are giving above and beyond their normal amount.
  • Our goal is to match it before June 1 by building our unique donor base and encouraging existing donors to contribute more.

What will we do with the funds?
  • We plan to use the funds to launch and maintain a rising 5th grade pilot program. 5th grade is a critical transition year as kids head into middle school. Research indicates that the gap between those with lower and higher reading ability seems to widen through the middle school years.
  • It’s critical ENHE extends our programs to include the 5th grade level to ensure we’re strengthening literacy during this pivotal year.

ENHE is committed to providing children with the fundamentals for success by inspiring a passion for reading, learning and family engagement. In turn, this strengthens our community and helps change the lives of the children and families we support.

With this donation, we have a unique opportunity to build our program and help support more children in our community. Help us raise $50k for 5th grade!
